MereLingo Roadmap

Merelingo is a community-built, language-learning platform, with notebooks for personal collections of grammar studies.

Alpha Launch (V0)

We are rolling out Version 0 (V0). Everything below is grouped by feature, so you can see how far along each piece is.

Planned Features

The work below maps onto six feature milestones:

✅ Done · 🚧 Started · ⏳ Next · 🔭 Planned

FeatureStatusDescription
Languages✅ DoneAdding and updating site languages
Notebooks✅ DoneKeep all your language notes in one place
Guides⏳ NextTurn your notes into guided lesson plans
Dictionary⏳ NextUser contributed dictionary
Flashcards🔭 PlannedStudy words and sentence built on top of the dictionary
Conjugator🔭 PlannedLook up the forms of a word to understand its use

Languages

  • ✅ Add/amend site languages — propose one that is missing, amend one that is wrong. Proposals are reviewed before they land.
  • ✅ Manage your study languages — you can add, update and remove the languages you are wanting to learn. Set your current aptitude (A1-C2 ratings)

Notebooks

  • ✅ Create notebooks — create a notebook to keep all your study notes in one place.
  • ✅ Rich text editor — use a rich text editor create and update language notes and give them detailed layouts
  • ✅ Manage Sections and Pages — organize pages among themselves and put them into section.

View the notebooks docs page to see how they work.

Guides

Current Project

  • 🚧 Grammar Guides and Lessons — turn a page you have written into a lesson and collect lessons into grammar guides others view as a whole, read through, and discuss.
  • ⏳ Tracking Progress — a way for users to be able track their progress through peoples lessons (pick up where you left off).
  • ⏳ Collaborative Lessons - allow people to work together on creating lessons and guides.

Dictionary

A open-dictionary where anyone can add to it or request definitions. This will be a big project and will be ongoing and updated for a while. We are planning to have a up-down voting system to improve confidence, as well as the ability for discussion pages for more nuanced approaches.

  • ⏳ Basic Dictionary — browse the dictionary by language. View words by parts of speech or grammar tags. Users can add or request definitions for specific words information.
  • ⏳ Example Sentences — view example sentences of the words you are researching.
  • 🔭 Up/Down Voting System — a voting system to keep dictionary integrity once contributions are open.
  • 🔭 Pronunciation audio — crowd-sourced recordings to go with the phonetics.
  • 🔭 Multi-lingual Dictionary — We want to make it easy to link meanings and create a web between many languages, not just one language to another, which should aid people trying to learn multiple languages at once.

Flashcards

🔭 SRS flash-card system — spaced repetition system (SRS) based flash cards. We want to leverage the words registered in the dictionary, as well as their surrounding resources like sentences and audio, and make it easy to track which words you know, giving an idea of progress, and aiding studies.

Conjugator

🔭 Conjugation and declension tables

The conjugator is currently farther out on the list of things we want to do.

This one can get messy and will be difficult to account for all languages. Describing a pattern once per language and generate the whole paradigm, instead of entering every form by hand, is super useful, but languages vary a lot, so this one will take some time to create.

This will require a full morphological engine, which is difficult enough, but to make it user contributed will be 🤔 interesting... doesn't mean we don't want to try!

Data Limits & User Plans (?)

See our data limits page to see what are our current resource limits. Everything above will stay usable for free. Eventually we would like to add higher limits for people who want them (it will be cheap) or who simply want to support the site. We have tried to be generous in our normal (free) tier, but we had to put some limits just to make sure we won't break the bank and people don't abuse the system.

  • ✅ Normal (free) — every feature is free to use for everyone who has an account, with some set limits.
  • 🔭 A paid plan? — Everything in free with no limits.
